Travel Insurance: What to Check Before You Buy

A plain guide to what travel insurance can cover and what to read in the fine print. This is general information, not insurance advice.

Why I Think About Travel Insurance

Travel insurance isn’t the exciting part of planning a trip, but it can be one of the most useful. A canceled flight, a lost bag, or a sudden illness abroad can cost far more than the policy itself. I’m not an insurance advisor or provider, so please treat this page as general information and read every policy carefully before you buy.

What Travel Insurance Can Cover

Depending on the plan, it may include:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Emergency medical care and evacuation
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage
  • Flight delays and missed connections
  • Rental car damage (on some plans)

Not every plan covers all of these, and coverage limits differ a lot.

Check Before You Buy

  • Existing coverage: Your credit card or health plan may already cover some things. Read what they include and what they exclude.
  • Medical coverage amount: Care abroad can be very expensive in some countries.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Many policies have special rules, so read this part carefully.
  • Activities: Hiking, diving, and adventure sports are sometimes excluded.
  • Cancellation reasons: “Cancel for any reason” plans cost more, but standard plans only accept certain reasons.
  • Deductibles and claim limits: Know what you pay first and the maximum the policy will pay.
  • Entry requirements: Some countries or visas ask for proof of insurance. Check the official government website of the country you’re visiting.

When It Matters Most

I think about insurance most for expensive or non-refundable trips, long trips, cruises, trips to places with costly healthcare, and trips with adventure activities.

Buy Early, and Know How to Claim

Some benefits only apply if you buy soon after you pay for your trip, so don’t wait until the last week. Keep your policy number and the insurer’s emergency phone number saved on your phone. If something goes wrong, keep receipts and take notes and photos. Claims usually need proof.

Insurance and the Rest of Your Trip

Insurance works best when you’ve also booked flexible options. See how I compare flights, choose hotels with free cancellation, and think about car rentals and the coverage that comes with them.

A Note on This Page

I’m not a licensed insurance agent or advisor, and nothing here is a recommendation of a specific policy. Policies differ by provider, country, and traveler, so read the full terms, exclusions, and limits, and ask the insurer if anything is unclear.
