Renting a Car: What I Check Before I Book

A rental car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace, but the price you see first isn’t always the price you pay. Here is the order I follow every time.

Do You Actually Need a Car?

In big cities with good trains and buses, a car can be more trouble than it’s worth, with parking costs, traffic, and tolls. In places like national parks, small towns, and coastal routes, it gives you freedom you can’t get otherwise. Think about your route first, then decide.

Documents You’ll Need

Most companies ask for a valid driver’s license, a credit card in the driver’s name, and sometimes a passport. In some countries you may also need an International Driving Permit. Rules differ, so check with the rental company and the local authorities before you travel.

Understand the Costs

The daily rate is only part of the price. Look at:

  • Insurance and damage coverage (check what your credit card or travel insurance already covers before you buy extra)
  • Young driver or additional driver fees
  • Fuel policy (full-to-full is usually the simplest)
  • Mileage limits
  • Airport pickup fees
  • Tolls and parking

At Pickup

Walk around the car and take photos or a short video of every scratch and dent before you leave the lot. Make sure those marks are written on the rental form. Check the fuel level, the spare tire, and how the lights and wipers work. It takes five minutes and can save you from an argument later.

At Drop-Off

Return the car with the fuel level in your agreement, take photos of its condition, and keep your final receipt. Allow extra time if you’re returning it at an airport.

Driving Alone

Download offline maps, keep your phone charged, and don’t leave bags visible in the parked car. Plan fuel stops on long, empty stretches, and try to finish long drives before dark.

Before You Go

Arriving by plane? See how I compare fares on my flights page. If you’d rather not drive straight after a long flight, a pre-booked airport transfer can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit?
It depends on the country and on where your license was issued. Check the rules of the country you’re visiting and the rental company’s terms before you go.

Is the price on this page final?
No. Prices and availability come from our booking partners and change often. Always confirm the final price, fees, and terms on the booking page.

Should I buy the rental company’s insurance?
Check first what your credit card or travel insurance already covers, then read the rental terms. Coverage and limits differ a lot.

Do I pay extra when I book through your links?
No. I may earn a small commission, and it doesn’t change your price.

Is it safe to drive alone in a new country?
Plan your route, download offline maps, avoid long drives after dark, and keep valuables out of sight.
