Finding a good flight takes a bit of patience, not luck. I use search tools to compare airlines, check which dates are cheapest, and look at the full cost before I book. This page puts those tools in one place, along with my tips for choosing well.

Use the calendar to see which month is cheapest for your route, then pick dates that work for you.
Flights are usually the highest cost of any trip, so I spend real time on this part before I book anything. You don’t need a secret trick to get a fair price. You need a bit of flexibility and a clear idea of what you’re willing to trade.
If your dates can move by even a day or two, check the full month view in the calendar above before you pick. Midweek flights are often cheaper than Friday and Sunday ones, and the difference can be big on popular routes. If you can’t move your dates at all, be ready to pay more and book earlier.
For domestic trips, I usually start watching prices a couple of months out. For international trips, I start earlier, and I book once I see a price I’m comfortable with instead of waiting for a perfect drop that may never come. Prices change daily, so no one can promise the “best” moment. Decide on a number you’re happy with and book when you see it.

Budget airlines are great when you pack light. If you need a checked bag, compare the final price with a regular airline before you decide.
I avoid very short connections because one delay can wreck the whole trip. I also avoid very long overnight layovers when I’m traveling alone, unless I’ve booked a room or know the airport well. Arriving in a new city late at night is something I try not to do. Landing in daylight makes finding your transport and your hotel much easier. If you do land late, a pre-booked airport transfer can make the first hour calm.
When is the best time to book a flight?
There’s no single best day. For international trips, many travelers start watching prices two to six months ahead. Set a price you’re comfortable with and book when you see it.
Are the prices on this page final?
No. Prices and availability come from our booking partners and change often. Always confirm the final price and terms on the booking page.
Do I pay extra when I book through your links?
No. I may earn a small commission, and it doesn’t change your price.
Are budget airlines worth it?
They can be, if you pack light. Add up bags and seat fees before you compare.
Is it safe to book a long layover when traveling alone?
It depends on the airport and the time of day. I prefer daytime layovers, and for long ones I choose an airport I know or book a room nearby.
